Lately I've been reading this online manga called "Axis Power Hetalia", that contains characters representing nations and certain events in history for the most part. They are usually very stereotypical, but is meant to be funny. It's actually become very popular lately, leaving the manga and the anime (only 5 minute segments) to come out. I enjoy reading it.

It can be read here (The stories with Korea in it can be found in the extra stories index): [link]

HOWEVER, an issue has been brought up; Many people in Korea have signed a petition against the series in any form. The problem being that the Korean character is depicted in a way that isn't representative at all to Korea.

Many people are saying that it's not fair for the series to be stopped because of a group of nationalists. They were horribly upset, but never stated why, so I looked into it a bit, because I didn't understand at the time why it was so serious. Now I guess that people haven't really thought about it.

:iconsnatcherdudette:'s journal helped me understand why it's so upsetting. [link]

I can see the issue and to me, it's perfectly understandable on why they would be upset. But I really like the series too and I don't want it to be cancelled. I was just wondering if anyone else read the series and what they think about this issue?

I'm very curious about this series...God, why can't Koreans just accept that? :/ I mean, Vietnamese people don't really care and so does Chinese (except for communist reasons), but this is getting out of my hands...

Yeah, there's not even a Vietnamese character in there (as far as I know). But I suppose they could have made the Korean character represent Korea a bit more. I guess they just don't like the fact that the character is kind of a goofball, but most of the characters are like that.

Just wondering, do you like the series?

Must be that national pride that Korean or any other country doesn't want to see their country-tan turn into a dorky, instead of actually not taking the series seriously.

Yeah, I started reading the series and enjoyed it.

north will bitch about anything that dosnt make them look like gods. and south has image problems because of its relationship with the north they want to get away from.

The comic, or about the actual people?

Yeah, I can see that. I feel that everyone's being made fun of, so it doesn't seem that bad to me.

Yeah, the comic is general. It seems to be a mix of people though, that are upset.
